The Organisation

The British Assistive Technology Association (BATA) is a member led organisation that campaigns for the rights and interests of people who use, or could benefit from the use of Assistive Technology (AT). Our membership is drawn from across the AT sector; including manufacturers and suppliers of AT, AT Trainers, Disability Practitioners, Needs Assessors, Educators and End Users

Our aims are to:

1. Campaign for the rights and interests of those needing Assistive Technology.

2. Provide expert and impartRole Backgroundial support and advice to government departments and agencies.

3. Educate and inform widely on the benefits of Assistive Technology.

4. Promote British Assistive Technology products and expertise at home and overseas.

5. Develop the professionalism of those working with Assistive Technology through codes of practice, education, qualifications, accreditation, certification and networking.

Role Background

Following the retirement of our current Executive Director (ED), John Lamb, we are now seeking an inspirational and influential leader, who is passionate about the use of technology in transforming the way we learn, work and live and lead the organisation into its new phase of growth.

The ED is ultimately responsible for the delivery of the strategic goals as agreed by the Council and Directors of the organisation. The ED works closely with the Council, Directors and Officers to present a public face, build the BATA brand and drive increased membership.

As BATA continues to develop its public profile and influence among policy makers, the ED must bring drive, enthusiasm, a positive attitude and be committed to achieving results.



Position requirements:

Main Responsibilities

We are seeking an ED who will be responsible for BATA’s success in achieving its aims whilst working within the framework of its values and strategy set out by the Board.

The successful candidate will have demonstrable experience of influence and profile growth in a relevant sector, with a track record of innovation and success.

You will have proven leadership ability with strong people management skills, enabling management of our resources against objectives and standards.

Your business development skills, strengthened by your networking experiences will be key to this role. We are looking for an ED with public affairs experience and superb communication skills across a range of media.

The ideal candidate will be able to bring the essential following characteristics to the role:-

  •  Creativity: an understanding of how an organisation can provide new ways of creating value for membership and how BATA can present the benefits for users of AT.
  • Leadership: inspirational and decisive. Being prepared to take forward ideas they believe in and work with others to develop them further.
  • Strategic thinking: seeing connections and thinking through a cohesive strategy for BATA and the disability agenda in general.
  •  Commercial awareness: advocating the aims of BATA whilst understanding and explaining the business case for embracing disability as a priority for Government, business and society.
  • Networked: a significantly connected individual.
  • Credibility: confident at board level and in front of the target audience specifically the disabled community as well as business and government.
  • Communication: able to develop, create and implement a media strategy to promote the organisation and its aims.
